The Upside of a Winter Photo Shoot

Here in Wisconsin, many families tend to book annual fall photo sessions.  And I don’t blame you; the colors can be gorgeous and the weather is usually decently warm.  But I often wonder why more families don’t schedule a winter photo shoot… besides the obvious reason, of course.  It’s COLD!

Here are some reasons to reconsider, and schedule that Wisconsin winter photo shoot!

1. Winter can be beautiful too!  Yes, there may not be leaves on the trees anymore, but there is beautiful lighting that reflects off the snow (photographers rejoice!), it can bring a magical snowfall, evergreen trees, snowy paths.  And if there isn’t snow?  Try an urban location like the Third Ward in Milwaukee – with interesting buildings and alleys as your backdrop.  It’s a whole new snowy world that brings a whole new energy and feel to your session.

2. Having photos taken in a variety of seasons allows for a variety of “looks”.  Basically, you won’t be wearing a variation of the same “fall colors” every year for your family photos.  And you get to add more layers because of the cold which adds so much interest to your overall family look.

3. Worried about the cold?  While I would never shoot a session in dangerously cold temperatures, our usual winter temps in Wisconsin are definitely doable with a regular family or kids session.  There is always a lot of movement and distraction from the cold during a session, not to mention lots of snuggling with littles.

4. Won’t it be fun to look back on photos and see your beautiful family in a new season?  You will have a new set of photos to display unlike any you’ve had in years past.
