Momtographer Tips: An Overhead View
One way to get creative with the photos you are taking is to try an overhead view. An overhead angle can give a really cool perspective to your experiences. I particularly like the fact that this angle doesn’t disturb my kids. It gives me the chance to sneak up and capture the true moment.
Here are a few tips for getting great shots at this angle
Tip #1 GET AS HIGH AS YOU CAN
The higher you can get your camera or phone, the more area you will capture. This makes the shot a little more forgiving; you can crop out what you don’t want in the photo. Either reach your arms up high and snap away, or grab a chair if there is time.
Tip #2 HOLD YOUR CAMERA PARALLEL TO THE FLOOR
It can be tricky to hold your phone “flat” or parallel to the ground when your arms are in the air. However, doing so gives a true overhead shot and doesn’t add any slant to your image. Looking at your camera to be sure it’s flat instead of looking down at your subject can help.
Tip #3 TAKE A LOT OF PICTURES
When I’m taking overhead pictures I snap away, then quickly check the results. This way I can see if I need to get a higher perspective and if my subjects are actually in the photo. Be sure to go back and delete photos that didn’t turn out – check out this article for tips on how to keep your camera roll organized.
Taking pictures from an overhead view involves some practice because you can’t see your screen a lot of the time. However, the results can be a really cool, new perspective of your kids and their everyday life. I challenge you to take some photos like you normally would and then a few from an overhead view and see how you like the difference.
